A Burden Becomes a Prayer

On Nehemiah 1 · by Biblical Study Team

When the report from Jerusalem reached Nehemiah in the citadel of Susa, it broke his heart: “The wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire” (Nehemiah 1:3). He was a cupbearer, not a builder; a servant in a foreign palace, a thousand miles from the rubble. What could one man do?

Notice what Nehemiah did first. He “sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven” (v. 4). Before he drew up plans, before he counted costs, before he asked the king for anything — he prayed. And his prayer was not a quick request. He confessed the sins of his people as his own, claimed God’s covenant promises, and asked for favor “this day.”

Revival always begins this way. Not with programs, but with a burden; not with activity, but with intercession. The broken walls in our families, our churches, and our own hearts are an invitation to do what Nehemiah did: bring the ruin to the God of heaven and ask Him to rebuild.

Today’s question: What “broken wall” has God laid on your heart — and have you carried it to Him in prayer before trying to fix it yourself?
